Building resilient communities through integrated development initiatives
REDISOL's humanitarian mandate is rooted in the understanding that sustainable community transformation requires addressing both immediate needs and underlying structural challenges. Since our inception in 2009, we have maintained an integrated approach that combines emergency relief with long-term development interventions. Our work is guided by principles of community participation, local ownership, and evidence-based programming. We believe that lasting change occurs when communities are empowered to identify their own challenges and co-create solutions.
2009-2019: A Period of Discovery
During our initial decade of informal operations, our team documented the multifaceted challenges facing communities in Turkana. We recorded cases of acute malnutrition, waterborne diseases, educational barriers, and systemic exclusion. These field observations revealed that spiritual hunger could not be addressed in isolation from physical deprivation. By 2020, when REDISOL was formally registered as a Community Based Organization, these grassroots insights had crystallized into a comprehensive development framework.
Our Integrated Approach
REDISOL's programming model recognizes that sustainable development requires simultaneous investment in economic empowerment, social protection, environmental stewardship, and civic engagement. Our interventions are designed to build local capacity, strengthen existing systems, and create pathways for communities to achieve self-sufficiency. Every program is implemented in partnership with community structures to ensure relevance and sustainability.
Nachu's Journey from Vulnerability to Self-Sufficiency
Nachu, a widow and grandmother from Nakwamekwi, represents the resilience of Turkana's women. When our team first engaged with her in 2021, she was caring for three grandchildren under conditions of extreme food insecurity and water scarcity. Through REDISOL's integrated livelihood program, Nachu received training in climate-smart agriculture, drought-resistant crop cultivation, and water conservation techniques. Within six months, her household had achieved food security, with surplus production generating income for school fees. “This support didn't just feed us—it restored my hope and dignity,” Nachu shares. “I can now provide for my grandchildren and plan for their future.” This case exemplifies our commitment to sustainable, dignity-centered development.
Our food security interventions focus on building household resilience through climate-adaptive agricultural practices. We provide technical training in kitchen gardening, water harvesting, drought-resistant crop cultivation, and post-harvest management. In partnership with agricultural extension services, we have established demonstration plots that serve as learning centers for local farmers. Our approach emphasizes ecological sustainability and economic viability.
REDISOL operates a dedicated protection desk staffed by trained community health volunteers who identify and respond to cases of gender-based violence, child abuse, and discrimination against persons with disabilities. Our interventions include psychosocial support, legal referrals, and community awareness campaigns. We work within existing child protection and GBV frameworks to ensure survivors receive comprehensive support.
Recognizing the disproportionate impact of climate change on pastoralist communities, we have invested in environmental conservation and climate adaptation initiatives. Our reforestation efforts have established over 2,000 indigenous seedlings along the Turkwell River corridor. We also promote energy-efficient cooking technologies that reduce deforestation while improving household health outcomes.
Through community barazas and civic education forums, we enhance awareness of constitutional rights, devolved governance structures, and social protection mechanisms. Our advocacy work has enabled over 300 households to access government identification documents and social assistance programs. We believe informed and engaged citizens are essential for accountable governance.
Resource-based conflicts pose significant threats to community stability. Our peacebuilding interventions facilitate dialogue between pastoralist groups, mediate resource access disputes, and support community-led conflict resolution mechanisms. In 2024, we facilitated a peace accord between two historically conflicting communities, contributing to improved security and cooperation.
Our integrated health interventions address water access, sanitation infrastructure, hygiene promotion, and nutrition security. We have supported water point rehabilitation, constructed sanitation facilities for vulnerable households, and conducted vaccination campaigns in partnership with county health services. Our nutrition programs target children under five and pregnant/lactating women.
